Review of Hayley Williams’s Hair Dye Brand – Good Dye Young

The lead singer of Paramore, Hayley Williams, has been diving deep into her hair dye company, Good Dye Young. The brand is doing great, and as she is my favorite artist, I’m proud of Hayley for exploring something other than singing. However, it’s saddening to me since she doesn’t seem to be planning on releasing any more music anytime soon. Somewhat recently, Hayley even announced that she was going on a break from all social media and the press for a while. According to Altpress, in November of 2018, Hayley Williams made a statement saying, “It’s holiday season, but I’m working a lot from home, mostly on my side project Good Dye Young, which for the time being, is actually my main bitch.”

Personally, I was not a fan at all of her latest album, After Laughter (2017); it seemed entirely different from the style of music that made me first fall in love with Paramore. I’ve tried and tried and tried to enjoy the songs on that album but have had no success. So, maybe a break from social media is what Hayley needs to create something truly amazing. We’ll see! In the meantime, I’ll still be a loyal fan, and it will be quite fun to review beauty products that she releases.

About Good Dye Young Products
Good Dye Young’s main product is semi-permanent hair dye, which is what I will be reviewing; but they also sell a few other hair care products, like coloring tools, a lightener, hair makeup that washes out with water, and a 3-step color kind hair treatment for in the shower. The only product that I’ve bought so far is the None More Black hair dye. I also plan on trying their hair makeup and hair treatment products since they look interesting.

All Good Dye Young hair products are cruelty-free, ammonia-free, formaldehyde-free, peroxide-free, PPD free, and vegan. They seem a lot more professional in general than the hair product brands that I usually use. I am in no way a hair care expert, and I also have no shame in saying that I usually never spend more than $6 on hair dye. I don’t like spending tons of money on beauty products, especially since I like to keep my face and hair simple and low maintenance.

The Good Dye Young hair dye I bought wasn’t too expensive; I spent maybe double what I usually do plus shipping, and it shipped directly to my house within about a week. I purchased the hair color through Sephora rather than the Good Dye Young website, solely because I wanted the rewards points from Sephora.

Hair Dye Review
The color I bought was None More Black. They have a crap ton of other colors too, which are all very bright colors that are otherwise hard to find for a reasonable price, so far that I know.

Dye Colors:

Review Continued
I was so excited to see my package in the mail the day my new hair dye came. I opened it as soon as I had the chance.

For a backstory on some of my experience with other hair dye brands…

I have tried at least three or four different brands of black hair dye, looking for one that would make my hair as dark as possible. For some reason, no matter what color or brand I use, my hair always turns out with a red tint. One time I used a Blue Black instead of Black and that worked out well, but I still wasn’t 100% pleased. So, when I saw that Hayley Williams had created her hair dye, I figured it might work great because of the bright colors she always has on her hair. She clearly has more experience with hair dye than I do.

The first two things I noticed upon opening the box and screwing off the cap of the hair dye tube: no gloves came with it, and the dye looked very purple. I was extremely concerned about just how purple the dye was, but I figured it would work similarly to how Blue Black hair dye works, in that it uses a colored tone to bring out the black more.

The whole dyeing process would have been a lot easier if the dye came with gloves, luckily I had some of my own. I realize now that Good Dye Young has a set of tools that you have to buy separately; I wish I knew that before, but oh well. Besides that little issue, the packaging and tube of dye all looked well-made. To me, quality of packaging says a lot about a product and the people who made it; if the box or container looks cheaply made, then it’s likely that the brand company didn’t put much time, effort, or thinking into product development. So, it was a good sign that the box and dye tube all looked great.

Beginning the Coloring Process
I didn’t use an applicator to apply color (I usually don’t), so when I squeezed out the color onto my gloves, the prune-color was extra noticeable. When you paint or draw black into a background on a piece of art, you can add purple into the black to make it seem even darker. I’m not sure how it works, but I assume the method applies to hair dye as well.

There was plenty of dye in the tube, plus extra. I only used a little more than half. I feel like if I used the entire tube of dye, my hair would’ve turned out darker. So, next time, that is what I’ll do.

The color got everywhere, but it came off my skin pretty easily with cold water.

Overall Review
I loved this hair dye very much. I don’t have a picture of how my hair turned out because I ended up trying to go for pastel-colored hair, which didn’t work at all. Good Dye Young hair dye is a brand that I would use regularly, and I plan to. I am excited to try their other colors one day and I hope you try some because it really was inexpensive for a quality hair coloring.

My Love for Paramore
Paramore has been my favorite band for as long as I can remember, pretty much since the release of Hello Hello in the 2000s. I have a tattoo, which you can see on my arm in the picture above, of the logo from their Paramore album and lyrics from the song Brick by Boring Brick. That song and many others have gotten me through a lot in my life and any time that I feel like I’m losing who I am, all I have to do is listen to one of their songs, and it reminds me.

Disclaimer: I, Cassandra Johnson, am not sponsored by Good Dye Young or Sephora, and I was paid no money by either company to review any products, let alone write about them. I am simply a huge Paramore fan who enjoys writing and giving my personal opinion on products that I try at home.
